Online Competition And Your Small Business

Times change, and your business must innovate and change with those change the times. The other day, I was talking to an individual at the local coffee shop. He ran a specialty shop and had catalogs he sent out and he was well-known in his industry. He did telemarketing sales, had catalogs, and did a tremendous amount of marketing. He was the go to guy for his particular business niche. He told me that he retired about 15 years ago, and he was very glad to get out when he did. He explained to me that the "information highway" as it was called back then had competition popping up all over the place.

It didn't matter that he had an incredible amount of experience, the best products, or a huge customer list. Soon his customers were asking him to match price with those online. Some of those that had websites were offering products they didn't even have, that only he made, and then they would try to place large orders with him, and sell those products to his former customers online. He said it was getting a little crazy, so he sold his business. The business she sold is no longer around, the new owner merged it with a dot com around the year 2000 just prior to the crash.

Apparently the individual he sold to also made money, but not from selling products, rather from selling the business. Fast-forward to today, and you must understand if you have a small business you are competing with online businesses that may have little or no cost, and you are competing while you still have to pay for the inventory, your location, and everything that goes with running a brick-and-mortar store, all the while your competition doesn't have any of those reoccurring obligations and costs.

Often, you are buying from the same supplier at the same price, but your costs are higher, therefore you get into a price war you just can't compete. There is a way to compete however, and there are many products in which the people want to actually see before they take delivery of it, thus the justification for a real store, they don't wish to go online and buy something because they don 't trust it. Still, even though there are good reasons not to trust online venues as a consumer, more and more customers are taking that risk, it is making it harder and harder for many brick-and-mortar small businesses to compete.

Some say if you can't beat them you should join them, and perhaps that's my advice to you. Perhaps you should have an extra room in your business just for online sales along with whatever you are doing already. Rather than complaining about "who stole your cheese" maybe it's time to realize that the world has changed and it's time for you to change with it. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Affiliate marketing is a business model in which the affiliate sells other people’s products online and earns commissions based on those sales.

Most affiliate marketers use digital technology including autoresponders, website building programs, landing page software and digital marketing platforms to build their businesses. These technologies are in fact “autopilot money making software”, of a sort.

Marketers usually build email lists and they start doing so by advertising to suitable customers who they find on the various advertising platforms. Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter, for example all offer paid marketing platforms to affiliate marketers who use them to find their target audience.

Since digital products carry much less costs in terms of postage, storage and manufacturing, they can pay affiliate marketers much larger commissions. Physical products on Amazon tend to pay between 3% and 10% commissions. Compare this with digital products which pay out 40% – 50% commissions on a sale.

So you can see why digital products are a good way to go if you want to build an autopilot money making system. So how much of such a system is actually auto-pilot and how much work is involved?

With an online business there is still a lot of work involved, besides the automation which can help your build and scale it. First, you need to generate an income in order to scale up your business. Although an online affiliate business is scalable, many affiliate fail and give up without even building an email list to 1000 subscribers.

This can be for a number of reasons. For one, affiliate marketing is an open market; so anyone can ‘give it a go’. The barriers to entry are pretty low for an internet business. There’s fewer costs compared to a ‘bricks and mortar’ type of business. All you really need is a laptop and an internet connection. You don’t need premises or staff to run your business and you can sell anything anywhere globally.

But the smaller barriers to entry also means that many people try it and give up. It’s certainly not an easy business to get started in. But if you are patient and have a strong enough desire, anyone can take advantage of the online business systems and strategies available online to sell other people’s products.

For the people who stick at affiliate marketing long enough to see a good return, there are large rewards. Ultimately it’s a business model which can provide a full time income. You can also grow this income to surpass your current income, whatever it is you’re doing.

But don’t have any illusions that an online business is a ‘quick riches’ type of business. It certainly isn’t that! You still need to put the hours in and ‘learn your trade’ like any other business. The dream of working from home is a pretty strong pull to many people. But ultimately the discipline needed and the competition for attention online can stand in the way of online success for many.

If you’re an online course creator and you’re overwhelmed at all the tech side of promoting your course or how to get your message out there, or how to get people to buy from you, then this is what you’re going to want to learn today.

People get a bit overwhelmed and tend to run in the opposite direction when we talk sales funnels, but that’s what we’re going to be talking about today, right?

What I want to do is to help reduce the overwhelm for you when it comes to sales funnels.

Some people don’t like that word. They go “Sales funnels, that’s not very relational. Oh!”

You’re in business, you’re in business to make sales. Where the relationship comes in with people who will be your students one day, we hope, is through the sales funnel.

What the sales funnel do is that actually is an avenue to build that know, like and trust factor, because at the moment, you’ve got this great program, this great course that nobody may know about or a very few people know about, and you need to get it at them.

Let’s Talk About Lead Magnets

They need to know about you. That’s the first step in the funnel, is getting them to know you.

There’s a few aspects to a funnel, and that first tip are lead magnets. A lead magnet is where you provide something of great value to your potential student that they’re going to want.

They’re going to give you their e-mail address in exchange for this information. I don’t know if you’ve got the new Facebook page layout. That’s just been released globally. It’s been out in a few countries for a little while, but globally it’s just really kicked off.

Facebook, finally enough, as it does, has changed things up again. Now, our Facebook pages are allocated in the tabs. There’ll be a tab there for videos, a tab for posts, and such. It’s not just scrolling of who.

Again, that just highlights the importance of getting people’s e-mail addresses, because Facebook could do anything to your page at any time.

It could even go missing.

It could be deleted.

You need to get people’s e-mail addresses, and that’s the first step in the funnel where people get to know you and they provide their e-mail address in exchange for a great piece of information that they’re looking for.

Ideally, the lead magnet, people also go, “How do I create a lead magnet? What would a lead magnet be? What would I do?”

A great pro tip when it comes to lead magnets is that it’s aligned with your core offer.

Say, you do CrossFit, and you’ve got a program about CrossFit Training, the actual physical exercises. Don’t make your lead magnet about diet, because you’re talking about diet, and then in your core offer you’re talking about physical exercises.

Keep your lead magnet consistent and have it splinted down from your core offer that it’s going to be talking about exercises as well.

Keep it consistent to the program that you want to be selling to your students. That’s where we start. That’s where people get to know you, and that starts building the relationship, it starts building the trust.

Once you’ve got their e-mail, you deliver them that lead magnet that’s got the great information that’s going to help them transform their life just that little bit. Overcome a burden or whatever it is that’s keeping them awake at night or a problem that they want to solve.

You’re giving them that information and they’re going, “Wow! I love what this person had to say. They’re in authority in this area. I’m going to listen to them.” You deliver them your lead magnet.

Follow Up With An E-mail Series

The next step is you’re going to be following up with e-mail series. In this e-mail series, you’re going to be developing the relationship and also giving them some extra great information about other areas that they might be stuck in.

This e-mail series will again provide value to hem, help them overcome their pain point, but also build that relationship, build trust. After you’ve sent them an e-mail or two, that’s when you can introduce them to your core offer, “Hey! If you loved this information, this lead magnet, you’re going to love my program Great Abs for CrossFit Trainers.”

I don’t know. Great abs would be awesome. Wouldn’t it? Yeah!

Introduce your core product to them and get them to transition over. Give them some information about what’s in the core product and warm them up that way.

The sales funnel and the lead magnet is the start of the relationship between a person who doesn’t know you at all, to someone who’s going to be a raving, raving students, who’s going to be telling other people about your program and products.

I know a lot of people get caught in the tech and they overwhelm. You’ve got a fantastic program, but you’re just lost in the world of tech, there’s WordPress, and there’s all the plugins that go… 20,000 WordPress plugins that go with it.

Then there’s how do you deliver the course. Then there’s your check out. Then there’s your landing pages. Then, like we said, e-mails. How do you organize all of that?

That’s where I want to help you. I’ve helped business owners sell their products online that have generated multiple six figures. I know a bit about what I’m talking about here.

I’ve worked at the backend and I know the tech stuff, and I know how I can reduce the overwhelm for you. There’s just a couple of tools that you need to invest in, and they’re not expensive tools.

Some people might look at one of these tools, say, for example, ClickFunnels. I love ClickFunnels. It does it all. You can get started with that for just $97. That’s a sideline thing.

If you’re running an online business, you need to put so me money into it. What people will do is they’ll spend $20 a month on these two, and then another $20 a month on this one, and another $20 a month on this one.

Then you got three different things going on that band-aids, sticking all these things together. Whereas just if you invest in just one tool that ends up being that same price, it just streamlines it.

You can get your courses up and running and sold in as little time as possible. That’s what we want. We don’t want you to be banging your head against every wall going, “Oh! Should I use this tool? Should I use this plugin? Should I use this platform?” You want to get your programs up and running so that you can just start promoting them.

Get them out to your potential students and get your message heard.

How Would You Feel If eBay Blocked Aussie Shoppers?

Are there people in Australia buying your products on eBay?

You might want to promote a special sale exclusively for them because it looks like your future with them is indefinite.

eBay said it could resort to blocking Australians from buying from foreign sellers on its marketplace because of Australia’s new tax laws.

eBay refuses to comply with the 10% tax which the Australian government is imposing on imported goods sold online, calling it complex and unworkable.

Australia’s new tax law, which takes effect on July 1, requires online businesses that sell more than $75,000 worth of products in the country every year to charge GST.

eBay is a large marketplace which has over a million sellers selling a wide range of products and earning a revenue beyond the tax threshold which was set by the government of Australia.

Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison says this will ensure a level playing field for local businesses that aren’t exempted from GST unlike their competitors overseas; only foreign packages that have a value over $1,000 are currently charged GST.

However, eBay thinks of the proposed legislation as impractical since the current business models of online marketplaces do not support the collection of GST.

If they are to go with the GST changes, eBay says they will have to extensively reorganise their business models which could take a long time.

In a submission to the Senate Economics Legislation Committee, Jooman Park, vice president and managing editor for eBay Australia and New Zealand, wrote:

“No tax would be paid to Australia and none would be owed. It would raise no revenue, deny Australians access to choice and lessen price competition.”

He also stressed the point that the new GST does not even represent a win for bricks-and-mortar retailers because Australians would still find better options online.

Third-party marketplaces are not sellers

Besides the irrationality of the bill, eBay notes how it misconstrued the nature of its business.

eBay cleared up a misconception in the legislation which referred to it as a “seller” and an “electronic distribution platform”, for it is neither.

To clarify this, Park explained:

“eBay is not a seller. eBay does not own the goods, does not handle payments and it does not distribute anything. eBay is a third-party online marketplace that simply connects buyers and sellers.”

Though he acknowledges that there are some marketplace-style business models wherein the marketplace is also the seller, Park stressed that eBay does none of this.

He stressed that the Australian government purposely deemed eBay to be a seller in the new legislation so that they can give the impression of raising revenue.

When eBay polled 1,000 Australians, though, it found 59% of them did not support the bill.
